Library assistants are part of a team who help to ensure that a library runs smoothly. They spend a lot of their time dealing with enquiries and helping people to find the information they need. Edit
checking in and issuing items
collecting fines and sending out letters about overdue books
repairing damaged books
arranging inter-library loans and purchasing new stock
generally keeping the library tidy and books in the correct order.
They also use the internet for research, and may run a help desk in these settings.
In areas such as industry or education, they often have a wider range of tasks and may develop specialist knowledge of particular subject areas.
Employers include public libraries and libraries in other organisations, such as hospitals, universities and colleges, large companies, government departments and research associations.
Employers usually expect applicants to have five GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3), or equivalent qualifications, including English. In industrial or commercial libraries, they may need A levels/H grades or equivalent qualifications.
It is possible to study for relevant qualifications (such as City & Guilds Progression Awards, NVQs/SVQs, diplomas and national certificates), by day release, distance learning or on-the-job training. The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) and The Association for Information Management (ASLIB) run short courses for Continuing Professional Development. Apprenticeships may be available.
There may be opportunities for promotion to senior library assistant, or to gain qualifications to become a librarian or library manager.
Full-time library assistants normally work 37 to 39 hours a week, Monday to Friday. In a public library, they may work shifts, including some weekends and evenings. Part-time work is common. | |
